 When silence speaks, military discharge upgrades can be granted for those who have experienced mental health conditions, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, or discrimination based on sexual orientation. 

A historic funeral will occur at Willamette National Cemetery in Oregon on Friday, June 9, 2023. The funeral of Martin Cerezo, a US Navy veteran who faced an unjust discharge due to his sexual orientation, will be a momentous occasion, representing a small victory against the systemic injustices plaguing our country. Martin's discharge was posthumously upgraded twice, once to Honorable and then revised again to meet the service criteria of 24 months, finally making him eligible to be buried with full military honors in a National Cemetery as a veteran of the US Navy. Tragically, over 100,000 military service members faced similar discrimination and discharges based solely on their sexual orientation. Martin's funeral serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight against systemic oppression and injustice facing LGBTQ+ Veterans. Martin's family are working tirelessly to introduce a bill in Congress that will automatically upgrade and extend short service records to 24 months for all military service members unfairly discharged due to their sexual orientation. Part of this effort is to gain the support of both of Oregon's US Senators and readers like you. This bold action would make nearly 100,000 people eligible for the benefits they earned and end the systemic oppression that still exists in our country today.
